Our work
Roofs we've built and restored
A look at our recent residential work: roof repairs, roof replacement, new shingle roofs, metal work and gutters, flat roofs, silicone roof coating, skylights and flashing.
Roof replacement
Flat roof replacement, from tear-off to finished roof
Old roofing removed down to the deck, damaged deck boards replaced with new plywood, new boards fastened across the roof, and the finished roof with its new membrane, flashed skylight and vent.
Step 1, tear-off: the old roofing is removed down to the original wood plank deck. Step 2, deck repair: new plywood laid along the parapet where the old deck was replaced, with materials staged on the roof. Step 3, new roof boards: fastened across the whole roof, with torch and rolls of material ready for the new membrane. Finished roof: new membrane with lapped seams, a metal-clad skylight on a flashed curb and coated parapet caps. Finished roof: new membrane across the whole roof, with a flashed vent pipe and white-coated parapet caps. Finished roof, another view: metal-clad skylight on a flashed curb and a coated parapet.
Roof repairs
Roof repairs: patching & new sections
Failed roofing is stripped back to the deck, new base sheet and cap sheet are lapped into the repair area, and the edges and corners at the parapet are sealed.
Failed roofing stripped back to the wood deck by hand along the parapet. New base sheet laid in the repair area, laps marked with chalk lines, beside a flashed vent. A strip of new base sheet laid along the parapet, chalk lines marking the laps. New cap sheet strips lapped into the roof, with the edge and corners sealed in brown. Cap sheet repair lapped over the existing roof at the parapet corner, edge sealed in brown. New cap sheet section beside the parapet, with the parapet top and corner coated in brown.
Roof repairs
Roof repairs: flashing, skylights & penetrations
Leaks usually start where something comes through the roof or meets a wall. Here vent pipes, skylight curbs, a roof hatch, coping joints and a roof outlet are re-flashed and sealed.
Joints between the clay parapet coping tiles sealed in black. Skylight curb re-flashed with a thick gray mastic coat, vent pipe flashed in black cement beside it. Roof hatch, skylight curb, vent and wall base all re-flashed on one roof. Two vent pipes flashed in a black cement pad, skylight curb sealed in gray mastic behind. Vent pipe flashed in a black cement pad, wall base flashed in black and finished in white. Wire-glass skylight with the curb re-flashed in black. Close view of the skylight curb base, flashed in black. Small skylight sealed with black cement, wall base finished in white. Galvanized metal outlet set through the parapet and fastened to the new roof boards with round plates. The same type of outlet flashed in and sealed with brown coating, opening clear through the parapet.
Shingle roofs
New shingle roofs
From a fresh plywood deck to finished architectural shingles, with ridge and hip caps and careful membrane work along the edges.
New plywood roof deck installed and ready for underlayment. New architectural shingle roof with ridge cap and a membrane-covered section along the edge. Membrane-covered section beside the new shingle slope, with the raised edge built up in angled sections. Membrane with lapped seams, running the length of the new shingle slope. Finished hip roof with new shingles and hip and ridge caps.
Gutters
Metal gutters & downspouts
Metal gutters formed and installed along roof edges and walls, with sealed seams, secure hangers and downspouts to carry water away.
Metal gutter along the roof edge, held with strap hangers fastened into the roof. Custom-formed white metal gutter along the wall, with sealed seams and a closed end. Black metal gutter along the roofline, with the downspout run down the wall corner.
Metal work
Metal coping, caps & flashing
Sheet-metal coping and caps formed to fit each parapet and railing, with sealed joints and clean corners.
White metal coping on membrane-flashed parapet walls, with formed corners and end caps. Long run of dark metal coping along the parapet, with the roof membrane alongside. Dark metal coping along the parapet, seen from the corner of the roof. Dark sheet-metal coping capping the parapet along the roof edge. Black sheet-metal cap formed around railing posts, with sealed joints.
Silicone coating & solar
Silicone roof coating around solar panels
Seams are reinforced under and between the array, then the silicone coating is carried around every leg and post and sealed at its base. Here is one roof from base coat to finished.
Base coat stage: red base coat with white-reinforced seams, the skylights and roof hatch edged in white, beside the solar panels. Base coat stage: seams reinforced between the solar-array legs, each leg base sealed with a round pad of coating. Finished white silicone coating across the roof, with the skylights, roof hatch and vents sealed, beside the solar array. Finished roof, wider view: white silicone coating carried up the parapet and around the skylights and roof hatch. Finished white silicone coating around the guardrail posts and solar-array legs, each base sealed with coating. Finished white silicone coating around the aluminum solar-array legs, each base sealed, and the roof-edge wall coated. Glossy silicone coating carried over a raised curb and up the parapet, with the solar-array legs sealed at their bases.
Silicone roof coating
Silicone roof coating
Seams, skylight curbs and penetrations are reinforced first, then the whole roof gets a seamless white coating. Here are those stages from base coat to finished roof.
Finished white coating across the roof, with skylights and vents sealed. Seams, skylight curbs and pipe penetrations reinforced with white coating over a red base coat. White coating carried up the parapet and around penetrations. Skylight curb and vent flashing sealed and reinforced before the finish coat.
Flat roofs & flashing
Flat roofs, skylights & flashing
Modified bitumen cap sheet roofs with careful detailing at skylights, vent pipes, parapets and wall junctions, the places leaks usually start.
New cap sheet roof with flashed skylights, vent pipe and wall junctions. Membrane flashing turned up the wall, with a reinforced seam patch and a sealant bead along the top edge. Wall flashing detail: membrane turned up the wall and sealed with flashing cement. Pyramid skylight with wired glass, new galvanized frame and a sealed curb.
Roof hatches
Roof hatches
Roof hatch curbs wrapped in cap sheet or coated, with the corners and the roof around them sealed so water stays out of the access.
Roof hatch on a curb coated in brown, with the coating carried out onto the roof around it. Roof hatch on a cap-sheet-wrapped curb with brown-sealed corners, vent pipes flashed in brown pads beside it. Roof hatch with its exit label, sealed along the base of the curb.
Skylight installation
Skylight installation & curbs
New curbs built for skylight openings, metal-framed wired-glass skylights installed on flashed curbs, and coated curbs with the flashing carried out onto the roof.
Skylight replacement: new wood curbs built for two openings, new metal frames ready on the roof. New galvanized pyramid skylight with wired glass on a cap-sheet-wrapped curb, corners sealed in brown. Two pyramid skylights with wired glass and metal frames, curbs wrapped in cap sheet and corners sealed in brown. Skylight curb coated in brown, with the coating carried out onto the cap sheet roof. Raised curb box wrapped in cap sheet, corner pads sealed in brown, beside a flashed wall.

Bulkhead roof with new cap sheet, a flashed skylight curb, a coated wall edge and a metal gutter along one side.
How we coat a roof
From base coat to finished roof
01
Prepare & base coat
The roof is cleaned and a base coat goes down so the surface is sealed and uniform.
02
Reinforce the weak spots
Seams, skylight curbs, vents and base flashings get extra reinforcement, since these are where leaks start.
03
Finish coat
A finish coat completes the system and gives the roof a clean, uniform, protective surface.
